For many years, the 1.7-acre site, located directly across from the Buffalo Sabres hockey arena, was left vacant and undeveloped. In 2012, plans emerged for the development of HARBORCENTER. This multi-purpose hospitality and entertainment venue is one of the most ambitious hockey complexes in the world. This state-of-the-art sports, retail and entertainment complex is the only one in the NHL to boast three professional-size ice rinks. It also includes a 13,000-square-foot restaurant, a 205-room Marriott hotel, an unparalleled sports performance training facility and a one-of-a-kind Tim Hortons Café & Bake Shop—each with their own unique building control and energy management needs.

U&S Services supported this ambitious project throughout construction. To ensure the NHL-size ice rinks would meet the league’s strict ice conditions, U&S delivered a fully-integrated, high-efficiency environmental controls system to receive input from the existing energy management systems controlling the ice rink at First Niagara Center. The new system needed to be cost effective and backwards compatible with the systems we previously installed, incorporating infrared ice surface temperature sensors, slab temperature sensors and a complete building management system that gathers and responds to sensor data throughout the facility.
